Burning off Steam
The child's mom told me her story while her daughter worked on this piece with intensity. They were from another town, and came a long way to The Children's Hospital after a tough bout of what they thought was the flu, only to discover she had leukemia. There they were put into isolation, a single mom, the young preschool patient and her baby sister, and this was the first time they had been out of the room for 16 long days. It was an emotional experience, and the need to communicate, both verbally and creatively, was enormous.
