Snails on a Snail Shelf
Many pieces showed a sense of humor. This young man was a bit reticent at the first of our session together. Finally he tore a strip of paper, put a slit in the top of it, rolled it up, tossed it on the table and said, "There ya go, it's a snail." It made me laugh! So we started laughing together, and I kind of heckled him into thinking about snails. We tossed ideas about them, along with their snail families, and how they'd slide across the installation. He had such fun and created the specialized shelf with snail finials to present his snails. He was so pleased with his piece that he brought his family and visitors to see his creation. This is exactly what artists want with an art exhibition, and while he never realized it before, this kiddo was a true artist.
